Budget shows Wynne no different than McGuinty
(Queen’s Park) – The Liberal Government’s budget demonstrates that the “new” Liberal
Government is the same as the old Liberal Government, says Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted
Arnott.
On May 2, Finance Minister Charles Sousa unveiled the budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year. Mr.
Arnott was left disappointed.
“Despite a new face on the Government, their overall budgetary policy has not changed,” Mr.
Arnott argued. “The unfortunate reality is that Dalton McGuinty and Kathleen Wynne have the
same approach to budgets: bigger government, higher spending, and larger deficits.”
“They’re showing that they just don’t get the seriousness of the debt and deficit problems that
Ontario is facing,” he added. “This is a Government that is borrowing $1.3 million an hour, 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. In their 10 years in office, they have doubled the size of the
provincial debt.”
Mr. Arnott pointed out that for the second year in a row, the Government has veered left to
secure the support of the NDP.
“The lead up to the last two budgets have been political auction sales,” said Mr. Arnott. “The
Liberals have been throwing around money to buy the support of the NDP with little regard to
the fact that it’s borrowed.”
Mr. Arnott also noted that the hundreds of millions of dollars wasted on the gas plant scandal
has destroyed whatever credibility the Liberal Government might have had left: “I believe
they’ve lost the moral right to govern,” he said.
“I simply cannot support the budgetary policy of this Government,” Mr. Arnott concluded. “We
need a Government that is serious about dealing with the fiscal challenges facing our province
and that will get Ontario back on the path to prosperity.”
