MPP Arnott attends Fergus Highland Games
(Wellington-Halton Hills) – Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott was pleased to be the guest
of honour at the opening ceremony of the 69 Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games on
August 9, along with his wife Lisa. He delivered the following remarks:
It’s an amazing honour for me, as the Member of Provincial Parliament for Wellington-Halton
Hills, to welcome you here today, for the 69th annual Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland
We give thanks this weekend for the glorious sunshine, but Lisa and I also want to express our
sincere appreciation to the hundreds of volunteers who work so hard, year after year, to give us
the best 3 day Scottish festival and games in North America! Thank you!
More than a century ago, my people came to this area from Crieff, Scotland, where strangely
enough, they make a fine single malt Scotch whisky!
But all of us here today in Fergus, are united in the pride of our Scottish heritage, and how the
Scots “invented the modern world,” as Arthur Herman wrote in his famous book.
We are justly proud of our clan associations and family histories, our determination, our fighting
spirit, our passion for life.
We are proud of our many and varied contributions to education, medicine, science, the arts,
economics and democratic government.
In every one of these fields over hundreds of years, Scots played leading roles in pushing aside
old orthodoxies, and embraced revolutionary ideas and thinking, changing the world for the

Proud of our ancestral home of Scotland,
Proud of our contributions in the past and the present day,
Proud of our children and grandchildren who will carry these values and traditions into the new
We thank God for Scotland, all that she represents,
That she lives on, not only in the United Kingdom, but indeed, all over the world,
And in all of our hearts!
