New Court House needed in Halton Region: MPP Arnott
(Wellington-Halton Hills) – Halton Region needs a new Court House and Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott is prepared to work with other Halton area MPPs to achieve this goal.
Mr. Arnott toured the facility on September 10, and the next day wrote to Office of Attorney General Madeleine Meilleur to impress upon her the clear need.
“It [the existing court facility] is absolutely inadequate, and there are serious, legitimate concerns about security and privacy,” he wrote.
On November 6, Mr. Arnott again raised the need for a new Court House, this time in a statement in the Ontario Legislature.
“Earlier this year, I was copied on a letter to Ms. Laura Oliver, President of the Halton County Law Association, from Paul Stunt, a lawyer in Oakville, said Mr. Arnott. “He outlined the need for ‘a new and adequate court facility to serve the residents of Halton Region.’”
“In response, I gave him a call and suggested he invite the Halton area MPPs for a tour of the
existing, inadequate court facilities in Milton. He agreed,” Mr. Arnott continued. “I was pleased to have the opportunity to tour the Court House on September 10, and later to attend a Town Hall meeting of Court House users, including lawyers, judges, and staff. I understand that the other Halton MPPs – my colleagues – are scheduled to be touring the Court House next week.”
Mr. Arnott made it clear that he is prepared to work with MPPs of all political stripes to get the job done: “As always, I am prepared to work cooperatively across party lines with Halton MPPs to encourage the Government to approve the new Court House we need in Halton.”
“I’ve also discussed this issue directly with the Attorney General and our Attorney General Critic and I appreciate their genuine interest,” added Mr. Arnott.
“The Government is planning to spend $254 million for justice infrastructure this year and we would anticipate they will be spending a similar amount going forward,” Mr. Arnott said afterwards. “A new Halton Court House should be a priority.”
Milton Mayor Gord Krantz and CAO William Mann were in the Ontario Legislature’s Visitor’s Gallery when Mr. Arnott delivered his statement.
