“How will democracy fare in the twenty-first century? Can the civic spirit born in Athens in 430 BC deal
with the microchip?”
-Patrick Watson and Benjamin Barber in the introduction to their 1988 book, The Struggle for
Democracy
The democratic ideals that we all value—but sometimes take for granted— are being challenged around
the world. Authoritarian leaders are stoking and amplifying the resentment, fear and anger felt by
individuals struggling with current events. Instead of seeking to bring people together through honest
dialogue, they seek to divide and conquer with misinformation repeated over and over again.
The health of democracy in any jurisdiction is dependent on free and fair elections with a secret ballot;
the rule of law with an independent judiciary; citizens’ rights to freedom of thought, speech and
assembly; and a free news media that informs and educates truthfully and without bias.
In order to flourish, democracy requires the nurturing engagement of citizens. And not just at election
time.
Canadians elected a new Parliament last fall, and Ontarians elected a new Legislative Assembly in the
spring. This fall, municipal elections will be held in the province, and new local Councils will be elected
on October 24.
Our municipal order of government is closest to the people, directly accountable to local residents, and
delivers many of the vital services that impact our day-to-day lives the most. Unfortunately, these
elections often have the lowest voter turnout. We should all take an interest, and all get involved.

The Legislative Assembly of Ontario began sitting again, in-person, on August 8. The post-election
debates in the House have been thoughtful and vigorous, and the Legislature has been rejuvenated with
the enthusiasm of 36 new MPPs.
As always, my priority continues to be the concerns of my constituents in Wellington-Halton Hills. We
seek to ensure that Ministers hear every voice and view, and I continue to have many conversations and
meetings at Queen’s Park to press our communities’ interests and needs.
Please do not hesitate to contact our Office if you have an idea or suggestion pertaining to the Provincial
Government.
