Big Brothers Big Sisters reception at Queen’s Park

Ted Arnott spoke at the October 20, 2010 Big Brothers Big Sisters reception at Queen’s
Park. The following is the text of his remarks:

Good evening, everyone. I’m delighted to be here and delighted to have this chance to
welcome you to the Legislature and bring greetings on behalf of Tim Hudak and my PC
Caucus colleagues.

Tim wanted to be here, but unfortunately his schedule had to change and I know he
would want me to express to you his regrets and best wishes.

It’s great to see so many MPPs here tonight from all political parties. Judging by the
turnout here tonight, and the tremendous work that you do, Big Brothers Big Sisters is a
cause we all can support.

Your program provides mentors to young boys and young girls all across the province.
Thanks to your efforts, kids in every corner of Ontario are more likely to stay in school
and stay out of trouble.

Before I was elected to the Legislature, I served my community as a Big Brother in the
village of Arthur. I continue to lend my support as an honourary member of the Board of
Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Wellington.

In 2000, I was honoured to meet Retired U.S. General Colin Powell, when he visited
Toronto to help us launch Ontario’s Promise.

Modeled after General Powell’s America’s Promise, our program, Ontario’s Promise,
was designed to mobilize business and community leaders, parents and volunteers to
help children and youth by encouraging mentoring programs like Big Brothers and Big
Sisters.

I was always a big believer in Ontario’s Promise and its potential to change young lives
for the better, because in my experience, mentoring programs work.

And you know this better than we do, because of your dedicated efforts. Big Brothers
Big Sisters makes such a difference for so many young people.

For that, we thank you and wish you continued success.
