Rockwood to get new traffic signals near École Harris Mill Public School

(Wellington-Halton Hills) – The Government of Ontario and the Township of Guelph/Eramosa have announced that new traffic signals will be installed at the intersection of Highway 7 and MacLennan/Dunbar Streets in Rockwood, near École Harris Mill Public School.

“I am very pleased with this Provincial announcement.  This was a major safety concern for our residents and I want to express a heartfelt thanks to Minister Liz Sandals and Minister Steven Del Duca for their foresight in moving forward with this traffic light,” Mayor Chris White said.

“This is a very busy and potentially dangerous school crossing and this traffic light is critical for the safety of our children and our residents,” Mayor White continued.  “I also want to give a special thanks to our MPP Ted Arnott, who worked continually on this and was pivotal in getting this done.  I look forward to the installation of this light.”

Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott, who was at the June 23 announcement in Rockwood, welcomed the Hon. Liz Sandals to his Riding.  He also recognized the contributions of Township officials and local residents.

“Mayor Chris White, Township Council and Staff, and local residents like Jen MacLeod deserve enormous credit for their efforts,” said Mr. Arnott. “They have worked long and hard to bring this issue to the forefront and have been instrumental in helping to secure a commitment from the Ministry of Transportation for new traffic signals.”

Mr. Arnott has been working with Mayor White, Township Officials, and local residents to raise the problem with the Ministry of Transportation since École Harris Mill Public School first opened its doors in September 2014.

“Children walking across Highway 7, on their way to school, need to be able to cross safely,” Mr. Arnott said. “For a long time we’ve maintained that the installation of new traffic signals is the best way to ensure their safety.”

Since the problem was first brought to his attention in September 2014, Mr. Arnott has raised the issue in the Legislature, written numerous times to the Minister of Transportation, and repeatedly pestered the Minister in the Legislature, urging him to take action to address the problem.

Working with Mayor White, Mr. Arnott launched a petition in November 2016, calling on the Government to find and install traffic signals at the intersection as soon as possible.  By the time the petition was presented in the Ontario Legislature in February 2017, it had garnered more than 400 signatures.
