Dennis Norton receives the 2018 Georgetown Hockey Heritage Award
(Wellington-Halton Hills) – On March 5th, Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott attended the 41st Annual Georgetown Hockey Heritage Awards Dinner in Acton, where Dennis Norton’s outstanding community service was recognized.
The following is the text of Mr. Arnott’s remarks:
I want to begin by expressing my thanks to the Georgetown Hockey Heritage Council and Georgetown Kinsmen Club for planning and organizing this 41st Annual Hockey Heritage Dinner.
I’ve been coming to this dinner on the “First Monday in March,” as Dave Kentner always reminds us, for the past 10 years. This fine community event gets better and better, each and every year.
Next, I want to thank all of you for coming to celebrate our great winter tradition and past time, and all the great people in this community who make Georgetown “Hockey Central” in Canada.
As a former hockey dad myself, I remember, fondly, those early morning practices, the out-of-town tournaments, the excitement of the competition, and the pride and the thrill of seeing my son Phill make some spectacular plays.
All of this is possible for all our families, because of the volunteer involvement of so many in our hockey programs, people like Dennis Norton, this year’s Hockey Heritage Award recipient.
Dennis, we all join with your family and friends proud that you’re being honoured tonight, and grateful for your life-long participation, starting in Georgetown minor hockey, and eventually at the provincial and national levels, where your efforts have had an impact across the Country.
Dennis, your service is an inspiration to all of us and a reminder that every citizen has a calling to give back to their community, in whatever way our time, interests, talents and skills allow.
As the Member of Provincial Parliament representing Halton Hills, I congratulate you Dennis, and I encourage all of you here tonight,
And paraphrase President John F. Kennedy: Ask not what your community can do you for; ask what you can do for your community.
