MPP Arnott congratulates Groves volunteers
(Queen’s Park) – Congratulating the Groves Hospital Volunteer Association, Wellington-Halton Hills
MPP Ted Arnott praised their leadership in raising $1 million for the new Groves hospital.
“This amazing community success story didn’t just happen,” said Mr. Arnott in a May 31 statement
in the Ontario Legislature. “It involves literally thousands and thousands of hours of volunteer
labour… and a sense of community spirit that is second to none in the province.”
On the same day in Fergus, the association celebrated its million-dollar milestone as well as the
$500,000 it raised for the Groves CT scanner. Because the Legislature was in session, Mr. Arnott
could not attend the event but wanted to extend his congratulations with his statement at Queen’s
Park.
“I want to thank Rob Gilbert for reading my comments at the event and, of course, for the exemplary
leadership that he and Norma Seibert have provided,” Mr. Arnott later added. “Each and every one
of the 250 volunteer association members deserves enormous credit, for they work as a team.”
Mr. Arnott concluded his statement by again calling on the McGuinty government to allow Groves to
move forward to the next planning stages for its long-planned new hospital.
“This would be an appropriate way for this government to show its appreciation to Groves
volunteers,” he added.

Ontario Hansard – 31-May2010
Mr. Ted Arnott: One of the most eloquent public figures of our time once exhorted his nation, “Ask not
what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.”
This call to action has motivated generations of volunteers around the world to get involved, help
organize, build their communities or lend a hand to those in need, all for the public good.
I was born six months before John F. Kennedy died and I first saw the light of day at the Groves
Memorial Community Hospital in Fergus. In the 20 years that I’ve been privileged to serve in this
Legislature, I’ve always been very impressed in the extreme by the Groves Hospital Volunteer
Association, who have taken President Kennedy’s suggestion and made it their own.
Later this afternoon, the 250 members of the volunteer association will celebrate the fact that their
activities have raised $1 million for the hospital, fulfilling a pledge they made seven years ago. This
comes on top of the half-million dollars they have raised over the past two years for our new CT scanner-
raised one year faster than originally planned.
This amazing community success story didn’t just happen. It involves literally thousands and thousands of
hours of volunteer labour at two Opportunity Shops in Fergus and Arthur, as well as the hospital gift shop
and TV rental service for patients-that and a sense of community spirit that is second to none in the
province.
In closing, I want to thank all in the Groves Hospital Volunteer Association for the great work they do.
Once again, as I have so many times in the past, I urge this government to show its appreciation by giving
Groves the approval and support to move forward to the next stages of planning for the new Groves
hospital that our community will soon need in this 21st century.
