Liberals and NDP unite to defeat PC Motion on jobs
(Wellington-Halton Hills) – Promised cuts to provincial business taxes, which would have
encouraged job creation in Ontario, appear to be on hold.

Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott says this represents yet another broken promise by the
McGuinty Liberal Government.

“During the election last fall, the Liberals promised to complete their business tax reduction plan,”
Mr. Arnott said. “Now, when our businesses need a boost to encourage them to create jobs, the
provincial Government has slammed the door in their faces.”

Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak believes that reducing business tax rates now would stir job creation,
economic growth and result in more revenue for the Government.

His motion in the Ontario Legislature supporting business tax cuts was defeated by a vote of 64-36
on February 29th. The governing Liberals combined with the NDP to vote it down, while all PC
MPPs present for the vote supported it.

“If Tim’s motion had passed, it would have sent a signal that Ontario is open for business,” Mr.
Arnott went on. “Instead, the Government again missed an opportunity to encourage job creation.”

Ontario’s unemployment rate is currently 8.1%. The Ontario PC Caucus says that Ontario’s
unemployment rate has been higher than the Canadian average unemployment rate for 61
consecutive months – more than 5 years.
