Minister of Transportation ends consideration of Alternative 4-3

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 17, 2012

Minister of Transportation ends consideration of
Alternative 4-3
(Queen’s Park) – The Ontario Minister of Transportation has decided to end consideration of
Alternative 4-3 of the GTA West Corridor Study.

The Town of Halton Hills was informed of the decision in a meeting between Transportation Minister
Bob Chiarelli and Mayor Rick Bonnette late yesterday afternoon.

The decision came a day after Wellington-Halton Hills MPP Ted Arnott tabled a resolution in the
Ontario Legislature calling upon the Minister of Transportation to publically announce that the
Ministry would not proceed with Alternative 4-3.

Mr. Arnott made a statement in the Legislature Thursday afternoon, passing along the thanks of the
community.

“On behalf of the people of Wellington-Halton Hills, I want to thank the Minister of Transportation for
his decision to cancel Alternative 4-3 of the GTA West Corridor Study,” Mr. Arnott told the
Legislature.

Mr. Arnott also recognized local efforts in achieving this outcome.

“I want to thank the countless individuals who have worked so tirelessly to bring about this
resolution,” said Mr. Arnott. “The Town of Halton Hills Council and Halton Regional Council, and the
members of CRASHH, especially Wendy Bruchal, for all the work that they have done.”

“This victory belongs to them,” he added.

Mr. Arnott has worked persistently to bring attention to the issue in the Ontario Legislature.

In addition to this week’s resolution, he has raised the issue in the Legislature on multiple occasions,
including directing questions to the Premier in Question Period and delivering a Member’s
Statement outlining local concerns. Other measures he has taken include writing and speaking
directly to both the Minister of Transportation and the Premier, drafting a petition, and pushing for a
briefing with senior officials at the Ministry of Transportation.

In September, Mr. Arnott outlined a 10 point plan of actions he wanted to take to pressure the
Government to abandon Alternative 4-3. One by one, he checked off the points before Christmas.

Text of Mr. Arnott’s Member’s Statement, May 17, 2012

On behalf of the people of Wellington-Halton Hills, I want to thank the Minister of Transportation for
his decision to cancel Alternative 4-3 of the GTA West Corridor Study.

Sometimes the wheels of Government move slowly, but other times they move at a breathtaking
speed.

On Tuesday, I tabled a resolution calling on the Minister to announce that he was ending further
consideration of Alternative 4-3.

Less than 24 hours after that resolution was tabled, the Minister decided to deal with the issue.

Yesterday he initiated a meeting with the Mayor of Halton Hills to deliver the good news.

I want to thank the countless individuals who have worked so tirelessly to bring about this resolution.

The Town of Halton Hills Council and Halton Regional Council, and the members of CRASHH,
especially Wendy Bruchal, for all the work that they have done. This victory belongs to them.

For almost a year, my staff and I have worked hard to bring attention to the issue in this House. In
September I outlined a 10 point plan of the steps I wanted to take. One by one, we checked off the
points before Christmas.

I have raised it on multiple occasions in this House. I have written and spoken directly to both the
Premier and the Minister of Transportation, drafted a petition, and pushed for a briefing with senior
staff at the Ministry of Transportation.

Over the past year we have all worked so hard to bring about this conclusion, and I want to
congratulate my constituents for working together to put an end to Alternative 4-3.
